A Beginner's Guide to Custom Stitching & Tailoring Prep

Getting the Perfect Fit

Visiting a boutique for custom tailoring is an exciting experience. Unlike ready-made clothes, custom garments are sculpted to fit your exact body proportions. However, getting that flawless fit requires some preparation. Here is a beginner’s guide on how to prepare for your custom tailoring and embroidery consultation.

1. Pre-Wash Your Lining Fabrics

Most custom cotton lining fabrics shrink during their first wash. If your tailor stitches the lining dry, it will shrink the first time you wash it, causing the outer silk fabric to gather and wrinkle. Always wash and iron your lining material before handing it over to your tailor.

2. Wear the Right Innerwear for Measurements

The fit of a blouse or dress depends heavily on the undergarments you wear. When you go for your measurement session, make sure to wear the exact bra or padded inserts you plan to wear with the final outfit. Changing your innerwear later can alter the neck depth and shoulder fit.

3. Keep a Reference Design Ready

While tailors have catalogs, having a few screenshots of neck styles, sleeve lengths, and embroidery patterns you like helps communicate your vision instantly. Be open to your designer's suggestions on adjustments that suit your body shape.

4. Confirm the Margins

Good tailors always leave extra fabric margins inside the blouse seams (usually 1.5 to 2 inches) along with multiple stitch lines. This allows you to easily loosen or tighten the garment in the future if your body weight changes.

5. Decide on Padded vs. Non-Padded

Decide beforehand if you want padded cups sewn into the blouse. Padded blouses are excellent for backless or sheer-back designs where standard bra straps would show. Non-padded blouses are preferred for traditional daily wear as they feel lighter.

Conclusion

Preparation is key to a stress-free custom tailoring experience. Taking these steps ensure your blouse fits like a glove on the very first try, saving time on alterations and letting you step out in style.
